This is handmade sterling silver pendant in the shape of a lingling-o, and features rather difficult to find (but super pretty) Sonoran Gold turquoise. I went to the Philippines for the first time last November, and saw many people in the northern part of the country wearing this symbol. Being half Filipino, I'm still exploring how my heritage influences my artistic work, and I loved the concept behind this symbol.
The lingling-o is a symbol of fertility, but in the ancient sense of the word. As recently explained to me by Lane Wilcken, scholar and Filipino cultural tattoo practioner, fertility in this case is a holistic concept and is more related to an overall sense of well being, prosperity, and happiness than to making lots of babies.
The pendant comes on a 22" sterling silver rolo chain, and is stamped with my maker's mark and STERLING on the back.
Handmade by Stephanie Stamp under the sunny skies of New Mexico. Turquoise is considered a relatively soft and porous stone, and as such this necklace should be taken off before swimming, showering, or any kind of really splashy activity!
